Here are some answers to your questions:
What is Holden Village?
Holden Village is a Lutheran retreat center nestled in the mountains near the town of Chelan, Washington. Once upon a time, it was a remote mining community. When the mines were tapped out, it was sold to the Lutheran Church to be a retreat center. Individuals and families travel there to spend time in God’s creation. More on Holden Village can be found at www.holdenvillage.org.
What is there to do?
There are more possibilities than there is time! The schedule is loose. Each morning begins with a brief (5 min.) devotion. There are plenty of opportunities to hike, to explore and to play together. Fishing is available. For parents, there are a variety of optional programs available to you during the day. Examples from 2009 include seminars on the Bible, literature, science, pottery, leadership development, the environment, music and the arts.
Each week Holden brings in resource people who are experts in their field to lead these sessions. While parents are in sessions, age-appropriate children’s programs are available. (Parents who use these children’s programs are asked to volunteer for one morning assisting with the program.)
You are invited to find your own pace and pursue your own unique renewal and interests. You may participate in many of the offered classes and other opportunities, or very few. The choice is always yours. Relaxation and rest are what many seek at Holden, and these are readily available in the peace and quiet of the wilderness.
You may wish to sample some of the many opportunities offered in Holden's arts area: hand-built and wheel thrown pottery, basket weaving, weaving on various looms, paper making, paper marbling, relief printing, silkscreening, needlecraft, drawing, painting, lapidary and other classes.
Holden's facilities include a sauna, children's playground, bookstore, post office, ice cream snack bar, historical museum, library, first aid station, Hike Haus, pool hall and bowling alley.
Each evening our group will gather for a brief “check in” and discussion time together. Each day ends with “Holden Vespers”, a 30-minute worship.
How will we get there?
Getting to Holden is an adventure! It is accessible only by a passenger ferry that leaves from Chelan, Washington at 10am daily (Round trip cost: $39 per person). We will ask all families to be on the dock, ready to leave, at 9:30am on the Sunday morning of our week at Holden.
There are a variety of options for getting to Chelan. Some families will choose to extend their trip and drive. Flying to Seattle, or Wenatchee and taking a bus or train to Chelan is an option as well.
If there is enough interest, we can check into group pricing for Amtrak from St. Paul (or St. Cloud) to Wenatchee, Washington. From Wenatchee, there is an inexpensive bus that runs to Chelan.
What will it cost?
The total cost depends on your transportation method. However, the costs for the actual time at Holden are quite reasonable.

Ages 12-17: $275
Ages 4-11: $172
